Glucagon-like peptides-1 (GLP-1) medications are currently on the rise due to the popularity for managing weight control. Initially prescribed for the treatment of diabetes, an identified secondary benefit was as an appetite suppressant. This created a sudden increase in demand as individuals seek access to the variety of GLP-1 drugs to manage their weight. Consequently, benefit plans are evolving to now provide levels of coverage for these medications. While long-term results are still under study, the growing usage has created supply issues, contributing to costs exceeding $10,000 per year per patient. The question becomes can weight management be a combination of treatments resulting in lifestyle changes to enact forever effects to sustain an individual’s healthy weight.
